Mineola is a village in Hempstead, Long Island. The majority of people throughout history believe the name of the village came from the Algonquin Indian Chief Miniolagamika which translates to Pleasant Village. The Dutch and English settlers arrived to the area in the 18th century and in 1858 named the village Miniolagamika which was later changed to Mineloa. In 1906, the village was incorporated. From 1919 until 1929, Glenn Hammond Curtiss had an airfield in the area. Mineola is served by the Mineola Union Free School District which has four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There are several Brazilian and Portuguese restaurants to tempt your palate as well as several local businesses.
The most popular attraction is Memorial Park and the Mineola Public Library with high ceilings and an architectural design that brings many visitors to enjoy the view of Memorial Park through the windows as well as enjoy the large array of reading material.
